New Security System for Mobile Devices<\/span><\/p>\n

Manufacturers of mobile devices<\/strong> are working to improve the security of their access systems<\/strong>, a matter of concern for all users.<\/p>\n

Fiberio: A Touchscreen That Recognises Fingerprints<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most innovative<\/strong> of these devices is Fiberio<\/strong>, which has been designed by the German researchers Christian Holz and Patrick Baudisch. It is the first touchscreen that recognises the fingerprints<\/strong> of any person.<\/p>\n

The prototype has already been produced and everything would seem to suggest that the system is<\/strong> secure<\/strong>. Fiberio identifies<\/strong> the user through his or her fingerprints in every interaction<\/strong> carried out with the device in order to verify <\/strong>that the person in question is authorised<\/strong> to use it for this purpose.<\/p>\n

How the Prototype Works <\/span><\/p>\n

The prototype uses a standard diffuse illumination<\/strong> system consisting of a high resolution camera<\/strong>, a projector<\/strong> and a source of light<\/strong>. According to the project\u2019s Web<\/a> page, Fiberio is a \u201cmultitouch<\/strong>\u201d table<\/strong> which biometrically identifies<\/strong> users through their fingerprints in every interaction in which they touch the screen. The key<\/strong> element that makes it possible for Fiberio to show an image and detect fingerprints simultaneously is the material from which the screen is made. This is a fibre optic <\/strong>plate which can display images<\/strong> and sense fingerprints<\/strong> at the same time.<\/p>\n

When its surface is touched, the fibre optic plate shows the user\u2019s fingerprints. The fingerprint ridges<\/strong> in contact with the surface appear dark<\/strong> while the fingerprint valleys<\/strong> and \u201chovering\u201d parts of the finger, which is to say those not in contact with the screen, appear brighter<\/strong>. The fibre optic plate diffuses the light from the projector while simultaneously reflecting light in much the same way as a mirror would<\/strong>, which then produces the contrast required for fingerprint sensing.<\/p>\n

Creating and Memorising Passwords: A Thing of the Past<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiberio is the first interactive tabletop system that frees users<\/strong> from having to invent<\/strong> and remember passwords<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fiberio recognises<\/strong> both touch and \u201chovering\u201d objects<\/strong>, for example the user\u2019s fingers. Moreover, it recognises fiducial markers attached to tangible objects, as in the photograph above in which the circular marker attached to the cube measures only 3 x 3 mm.<\/p>\n

The fibre optic plate used by Fiberio as a screen is made of thousands of very tiny glass fibres <\/strong>(of 6 micrometres in diameter). This blurs all incident light and, by scattering this light in all directions<\/strong>, functions as a very effective light diffuser, an essential quality for projecting output on the touchscreen.<\/p>\n

The system means that in bank offices, for example, it is possible to ensure that only branch managers<\/strong> can approve operations<\/strong> that exceed a certain amount of money.
