Just a few days ago, Apple released on to the market its iPhone 5, a model that has integrated the Touch ID technology, this time designed by Authen Tec. (a company which Apple acquired last year).

In technological terms, today’s news takes us a little further. An electronics engineer (Isao Nakanishi) from the Tottori University in Japan has, together with his colleagues, designed a theft-prevention system for cars, which uses brain waves to confirm that the person about to use the car is in fact the owner.

The system measures the electrical activity signals from the brain (EEG) of the person who enters the car and compares them with those previously stored in a database, for example the owner’s. If the data don’t match those on the file, the vehicle is disabled.

The researchers suggest that the system could also be very useful for preventing robberies of vehicles transporting valuable goods or of public transport vehicles. Moreover, the system’s prototype can tell if a driver is falling asleep at the wheel or if he or she has consumed alcohol.

There is considerable interest in the new technology because of its possible applications, among them, as we have mentioned, as a security system for mobile devices.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1323 lazyload" data-src="/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/1_development-of-a-new-system-of-identification-using-brain-wave-readings.jpg" alt="Image from Flickr.
