This data is applicable to many countries around the world and seriously affects the environment as well as some of the population\u2019s access to natural resources. The building was designed by the Miller Hull Partnership firm of architects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Bullitt Center has<\/strong> <strong>50,000 square metres<\/strong> of space distributed across 6 storeys. The construction cost 30 million dollars, a third more than a normal building would, but <strong>over 350 materials were used which are not harmful either to human health or the environment and it is 99% self-sufficient in terms of energy<\/strong>, which has earned it the prestigious Living Building certificate.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>building obtains all the energy it needs from the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bullittcenter.org\/building\/building-features\/solar-district-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>solar panels<\/strong> installed on the roof<\/a>, which generate 230,000 kilowatt hours per year. It is designed so that the people working there can <strong>benefit from natural daylight for 92% of the working day<\/strong>; the <strong>large windows open and close automatically depending on the weather<\/strong>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bullittcenter.org\/building\/building-features\/warmth-from-below\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>heating<\/strong> system<\/a> has 26 geothermal wells; the bathrooms work with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bullittcenter.org\/building\/building-features\/waste-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>composting<\/strong> system<\/a> so that flushing the toilet only requires two tablespoons of water as they work with organic soap; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bullittcenter.org\/building\/building-features\/waterworks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rainwater is stored in and supplied <\/strong>from a tank<\/a> with a capacity of 56,000 litres which is housed in the basement \u2013 enough to cope with 3 months of drought.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2713\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2713 size-full lazyload\" title=\"Staircase\" data-src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/3_bullitt-centre-greenest-commercial-building-world.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 375px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 375\/500;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The \u201cIrresistible Staircase\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The building is an example of how urban areas can be influenced positively through the design of sustainable and highly attractive architectural projects. <\/strong>The aim of the promoters was to demonstrate that this intelligent way of building is <strong>profitable<\/strong> and to inspire other construction professionals to plan buildings that are more rational and beneficial for everyone. To this end, and to avoid having to repeat arduous tasks unnecessarily, such as identifying which materials are toxic and which are not, <strong>the Bullitt Centre team has documented everything they learned during the construction process<\/strong> and have made this knowledge available to other professionals in the sector. In addition, the ground floor houses the UW-Centre for Integrated Design, a space which serves as a learning lab for green design and energy efficiency.
