{"id":7401,"date":"2013-02-26T17:14:23","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T16:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.inmesol.com\/blog\/?p=356"},"modified":"2023-06-21T10:20:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T10:20:48","slug":"eighth-european-union-sustainable-energy-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inmesol.com\/fr\/blog\/eighth-european-union-sustainable-energy-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Eighth European Union Sustainable Energy Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-354 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/eighth-european-union-sustainable-energy-week.jpg\" alt=\"Sustainable-energy-week-24-28-june-2013-EN\" width=\"342\" height=\"117\" title=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 342px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 342\/117;\"><\/p>\n<p>Organised by the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>, this year\u2019s <strong>European Union Sustainable Energy Week<\/strong> (EUSEW) is to be held in <strong>Brussels <\/strong>from 24 to 28 June.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Every year since it was first held in 2006, the Sustainable Energy Week has brought together <strong>hundreds of organisations<\/strong> (with 30,000 participants from more than forty countries in 2012) which, through their <strong>contributions<\/strong>, aim to help towards achieving the European Union\u2019s <strong>energy objectives<\/strong> for constructing a <strong>more sustainable future<\/strong>. These include <strong>showing, promoting<\/strong> and <strong>analysing energy efficiency<\/strong> and adhering to a roadmap with a renewable energy target, according to which, <strong>by 2020<\/strong>, Member States will produce <strong>20% of their energy consumption needs in the form of renewable energy<\/strong>, as well as <strong>reducing <\/strong>their <strong>greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> and <strong>energy consumption levels by 20%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-353\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/1_eighth-european-union-sustainable-energy-week.jpg\" alt=\"Eighth-European-Union-Sustainable-Energy-Week\" width=\"567\" height=\"377\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Is it feasible to aim for a sustainable Europe by 2050?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>While 2020 may appear to be a date that gives sufficient time for the implementation of the European Union plans, at the beginning of this month of February 2013 the <strong>Committee of the Regions<\/strong> (CoR) <strong>called on the EU to look beyond 2020<\/strong> and to \u201ccommit to developing a long-term strategy that enables <strong>renewable energy<\/strong> to become a real competitor and <strong>truly alternative<\/strong> energy source for the years to come\u201d. Moreover, the Committee also suggests that the EU should consider the possibility of <strong>becoming 100% reliant on renewable energy by 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a communiqu\u00e9 issued on 1 February this year, the CoR lists the <strong>actions <\/strong>that need to be carried out <strong>in order to accomplish this ambitious goal<\/strong><b>: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the establishment of a European fund to support renewable energy sources;<\/li>\n<li>coordination at European level;<\/li>\n<li>increasing the role of regions;<\/li>\n<li>multi-management of the schemes;<\/li>\n<li>offering subsidies;<\/li>\n<li>the development of infrastructure providing improved electricity grids and smart grids;<\/li>\n<li>sharing the costs fairly among the EU Member States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Committee notes that \u201cthe importance of <strong>cross-border and inter-regional cooperation<\/strong> should also not be underestimated. Considerable <strong>investment in infrastructure<\/strong> \u2013 in terms of <strong>upgrading energy networks<\/strong> \u2013 is needed to <strong>broaden the access<\/strong> to renewable energy. Often renewable energy sources are not located close to <strong>final consumers<\/strong> so investment is urgently needed to broaden distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>The European Commission will award prizes to the best projects.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>As has now become a tradition, the organisers of the Sustainable Energy Week have called for entries in a <strong>competition <\/strong>in which this year\u2019s awards will be given to the <strong>best European projects for energy efficiency, sources of renewable energy<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cclean\u201d transport. Two categories<\/strong> have been established. The first is addressed to companies in the public and private sectors, academic institutions and NGOs, while the aim of the second is to recognise achievements in the field by public authorities and energy agencies.
