Cotonou is the economic capital of the Republic of Benin (West Africa). In 1960 its population barely reached 70,000, but it now has over a million inhabitants. Cotonou’s infrastructure – port, airport, railway and roads – have made it the trade axis of West Africa. Although the country’s capital is Porto Novo, the seat of government is in Cotonou, as are the majority of large companies and banks.
